What is a femtosecond laser?
The femtosecond laser is a popular new laser being used in the LASIK Eye Surgery procedure. It is relatively new, so the results are modest at best, but thus far, patients receiving LASIK Eye Surgery with the femtosecond laser have positive results almost unanimously across the board!
The advantages of the femtosecond laser are the ease in which it is used, making for better surgeon precision and more accurate, customized results for the patient. Surgeons are also raving that the corneal flap, which is created with a laser in the LASIK procedure, is better with the femtosecond laser. With the expanded software that comes with the femtosecond laser, surgeons have the ability to do an inverted side-cut - a major advantage among surgeons.
With all the advanced technology that is available in the world of refractive eye surgery these days, it may feel a little overwhelming to keep track of which technology you should be seeking as a layperson. If you're able to keep up on the research, ask your surgeon which type of laser he or she uses. If you're feeling a little daunted by the technological lingo, leave it to your surgeon to figure out the best technology for your eyes. Surgeons choose the instruments with which they are most comfortable and proficient with, so you can rest assure no matter which technology your surgeon will be using, he or she is probably very apt with it.
