LASIK is becoming so popular now that many young men and women are inquiring about their eligibility for this phenomenal procedure.
Unfortunately, many LASIK surgeons will not consider any men and women under the age of 18. Because the human eye is continuously going through changes throughout young adulthood, it is possible that some vision changes may still occur as late as 17 or 18. Changing any vision imperfections before this may be irrelevant later on, as the cornea could continue to change.
That said, there are some LASIK surgeons who are willing to continue slightly younger candidates for the laser vision correction. Some youngsters about to head to college could get just the edge they need by undergoing LASIK prior to those tough study sessions. Also, in some cases where health insurance may cover the procedure for a dependent, such as the child of the policy holder, but that dependent may be losing their insurance soon, a LASIK surgeon may consider doing the surgery just slightly prematurely. In some cases, a LASIK surgeon may feel that the underage patient is in high medical need of the surgery, and also consider doing it.
Regardless of how old you are, if you're interested in getting the procedure, go ahead and schedule your consultation anyway. At the very least, you can begin this fact-finding mission to know if LASIK is a good option for you, whether you're 17 or 67!
