I have abnormally large pupils. Will I be ineligible for LASIK Eye Surgery?
You might be. You see, there are some conditions - however normal they may be - that surgeons will say exclude you from getting LASIK Eye Surgery. Depending on the range of severity of these conditions, your LASIK surgeon may say you are not a good candidate to go through with the surgery.
Large pupils can be the cause of your vision problem...or it can be a complicating risk factor. Like people with dry eyes, the degree of abnormality of the size of your pupils is going to be the deciding factor for every surgeon - and it's usually decided on a case by case basis. Some surgeons have advanced technology that can determine if you can go through with the surgery in spite of your large pupils or if this will be a factor that makes you too high risk a candidate.
It is important to remember that while you may always be able to find a surgeon willing to perform the surgery in spite of your risk factors if you look hard enough, sometimes, majority ruling is the best. In other words, if five LASIK surgeons disqualify you as a candidate for the surgery, but the sixth gives you the go-ahead, you may want to think twice. Most surgeons are not willing to take any unnecessary risks on an elective procedure, and neither should you. Remember, this is your vision, and it's important - but it is not your life, and it's not worth taking the risk if you're deemed ineligible.
