I have abnormally dry eyes. Can I still be a candidate for LASIK?
Probably, but the definitive answer will depend on the surgeon. Dry eyes are a very common ophthalmologic problem, and depending on how serious a problem it is, can either be easily compensated for, or make you ineligible for LASIK Eye Surgery. Dry eyes are also more common in older people and in women, so this is also taken into account by surgeon before deciding to exclude you from a surgery.
The problem that you may face is that LASIK has been known to cause dry eyes or exacerbate an existing dry eye problem. In most people, dry eyes post-LASIK surgeon is easily fixed with either over-the-counter eye drops or prescription artificial tears. This usually solves the dry eye issue with very little added problems. However, if you have a very serious dry eye problem prior to the surgery, you may require an added step of the LASIK surgeon to expand your tear ducts to make sure they are properly moistened.
If you're concerned that your dry eyes are going to exclude you from being a candidate for the LASIK surgery procedure, consult with your surgeon. He or she will be able to assess you condition and let you know if you're not a candidate at this time, or if you can get the go-ahead to get the revolutionary LASIK procedure!
